Home Thai - Sydney

Experience close to real Thai flavours in the heartland of Sydney in a funky warehouse decor. Exposed brick walls, visible pipes and an open kitchen is just in line with the trendy look and feel adopted by most of the new restaurants in the market.

The long queues, the frantic service and the overly crowded restaurant, there is always a lot going on here at Home Thai. However, the flavours of Thailand have always attracted me to this restaurant. The live show of a cooking extravaganza is visible through the steam, smoke and the magical bursts of fire on the cooking stove.

The waitresses don't let us waste any time in ordering. We are quick to order some starters. The first one to arrive are the steamed dim sims. The dim sims were filled with minced pork, prawn and water chestnut, wrapped in wonton pastry and served with black vinegar. I personally found the over sourness of vinegar to be over-powering the taste of the dim sims. The filling was a bit dry too.

The garlic chive dumplings were soft and glutenous to the core. The sweet chilli combined with vinegar and soy was the perfect accompaniment.

Variety of flavours is key to a good meal and we played with flavours. The sweetness of satay balanced out the sourness of vinegar from the earlier starters. The skewered chicken, although slightly over cooked, was served hot with a mouth-watering satay sauce.

The Pad Kee Mao (stir fried spicy flat rice noodle) is a crowd favourite. The ingredients include chilli, garlic, chinese broccoli and basil.

To clean our palate before we jumped on the curries, we ordered the prawn and papaya salads. The Prawn salad had the right balance of onions, shallots, mint, coriander, lemongrass, lime leaves, chilli jam with an exquisite chef's dressing.

The papaya salad was refreshing and contributed with the added hot and spicy kick.

The green curry was less oily and adorned with coconut milk, eggplant, basil, lime leaves and red chilli.

The massamun curry has been my favourite. The slow cooked beef just melts in your mouth. The essence of coconut milk, peanuts, potato and fried onion add a further spark to the dish.

The most daring dish of the day was the Jungle curry. Truly Wild!! High on the 'hot' factor, the dish can turn your ears red. Eat only if you can relish the taste of chilli. Its a spicy curry with Thai herb, black fungus, bamboo, hot basil, apple eggplant and cherry eggplant.

The feeling of contentment can only come at 'Home'!!
